Overcoming a Life Threatening Health Issue Led Jane to Start Her Business

Jane Hardy has worked in the Financial Services Industry since the age of 21 – almost 30 years go!

Eight years ago Jane had a life threatening health issue which turned her life upside down; not to mention her finances!

After recovering, she decided to focus on helping others struggling with debts, whether it be an individual or business. A job she is passionate about and spends almost half her working week teaching clients about saving and managing their money.

According to a survey in October 2011, 69% of Britons are worried about having enough money to live comfortably, whilst 41% are worried about losing their home……….. These statistics speak for themselves. Education is key to surviving this current economic climate!

Jane is currently engaged across the UK speaking at events to help spread the word that if you seek help early with your financial worries, you really do have options and you don’t have to go bankrupt and that putting your head in the sand really do not help yourself or those around you.

What was your main motivation behind starting your business?

As above really and truly understanding what it is like in reality being in debt.

What’s a day in the life of you like?

Fairly varied. An average day might start with a networking meeting, then I normally see two clients a day, although often one of those might be in the evening or weekend, when husband and wife or business partners are at home. Whatever suits my clients really. I also speak at events around the UK on the importance of education around finances.

What challenges have you faced?

Getting qualified. However, I now have my own Consumer Credit License, is a Member of R3 (The Insolvency Trade Body), a Member of the Institute of Credit Management, plus many other groups. Also keeping up with the latest Regulations!

How have you overcome the challenges?

Hard work and one step at a time attitude.

What is your biggest achievement so far?

Every client has been my biggest achievement. Helping them take back control of their lives and their finances. If I can make even a small difference, then I feel I have achieved great things.

How do you balance work with relaxation?

Interesting question. As I see clients during the week, at nights and at weekends, it is quite difficult to juggle. However, I DO always have at least 1 ½ days off a week where I will go for a walk, spend time with friends and family or even have the occasional pamper treat. I also love narrow boating – a bit of an anorak I’m afraid, but the pace of life, together with our beautiful countryside is stunning and very relaxing.

How do you keep motivated through difficult times?

My clients keep me motivated. However, given the industry I work in, it can sometimes get quite upsetting. But then I look back and think of all the good I have achieved and that keeps me motivated.

Who inspires you?

My Mother. She is wonderful and luckily for me has always been there for me and taught me that if you look after the pennies, the pounds would look after themselves. She is still careful with money at 86 as she wants a bit put aside for her old age!

What advice would you give to other entrepreneurs?

Hard work and consistency! Keep the vision and give it 110%.

What’s your favourite quote?

Beware of little expenses; A small leak will sink a great ship – Benjamin Franklin

Do you have a business philosophy?

To do the very best I can and be.

What’s your goal for the next year?

To carry on doing what I love.
