“Life is a rollercoaster and so is owning your own business”

“Never give up. Life is a rollercoaster and so is owning your own business. You just have to bite your lip sometimes, put in as much as you can and get on with it” Read Jess Suter’s story below.

What motivated you to start your business?

When I was working in PR agencies, there was something not quite right. It was only when I stopped to think about what I would like to see in my own agency that I realised what that was.

The agencies I came across just didn’t seem to care enough about the public, businesses, or help out those that are helping others.

That’s when The Change PR was born.

Tell us about your business…

The Change PR is an international ethical PR agency, specialising in helping people and businesses with a social conscience.

We like to bring out the best in people and help spread the word of ‘the good stuff’

What is a day in the life of you like?

Wake up, read the news, check staff understand their tasks for the day, go through my 100’s of emails, start on clients projects (I have schedules for each) oversee what is happening in the office, rant about something online that I don’t agree with, out-weigh it with some fabulous news, fill up on coffee, go home and read some PR books, listen to some PR podcasts, and read a nice book.

What have been your biggest challenges so far?

Helping my mum through cancer whilst starting up my business. It was so hard because all I wanted to do is be with my mum and help her out and I felt like work was getting in the way, not that she needed my help that much she is a real warrior.

She is better now.

How did you overcome these challenges?

Diary!

I kept a log of my hours, projects, tasks, you name it I logged it. It helped me to manage my time more effectively.

What advice would you give to other business owners?

Be prepared, and make being organised your no.1 priority. You never know what could happen.

Also never give up. Life is a rollercoaster and so is owning your own business. You just have to bite your lip sometimes, put in as much as you can and get on with it.

How do you keep motivated through difficult times?

Talking and thinking.

Talking about your problems with a family member or friend or partner is the best medicine.

It is also important to put aside some ‘me time’

What’s your favourite quote?

I would probably say this one, it really airs the message to stand up for what you believe in:

“You have enemies? Good. That means you’ve stood up for something, sometime in your life.”

– Winston Churchill

Who inspires you?

My mum, and anyone that is happy right now even though they have been through a hard time.

Do you have a business philosophy?

Love what you do, do the best you can do, and be open to change.

That is by far the best advice I can give people.
