Juggling Family and Business

What does your business do?

Amanda Wilson and Samantha Golding are co-directors of Blue Orange Events Ltd. We consider ourselves to be more than just another events company because we aim to create lasting experiences for all our clients.

We organize a range of events from weddings and birthdays, to conferences and seminars. We are also able to provide training on different aspects of the event management process as well as provide coaching for those delivering presentations at events.

What made you decide to start your own business?

Having previously worked together on a number of successful events in the past we decided to combine our passion for business and events and created Blue Orange Events. We also wanted to be able to build a business that would enable us to be our own boss.

What have been your biggest challenges so far?

Our biggest challenges so far have been the frustration of things not happening as fast as you would like and the challenge of juggling all the ‘hats’ we wear.

Samantha is a wife and the mother of two children under the age of 5 (her son was only three months old when Blue Orange was launched) and Amanda is a wife and mother of a teenage daughter. We both have other jobs and are also ordained ministers. The combination of all these roles makes for a very busy life and one which calls for an ability to be highly organized and know how to maintain the right balance in order to ensure no area is neglected.

How did you overcome these challenges?

Knowing what our limits are is an important part of overcoming the challenges.

Communication is also essential. Ensuring that our husbands have an understanding of what we do so that they can offer support when needed, as well as letting each other know when things may be starting to get a overwhelming so that the other partner can step in and give the other some well needed breathing space

What advice or tips would you give to other business owners?

Make sure you’re doing something you enjoy as this will make the tedious moments more bearable. Also, be prepared for disappointments and use them as stepping-stones rather than obstacles.

Also, take time to celebrate your successes and promote them as much as possible.

What’s your favorite quote?

Amanda: “Just Do it” Nike

Who inspires you?

Amanda: Anyone who works hard to make their dreams come to life.

Samantha: My husband Julian Golding because every thing he says he’s going do he does and every thing does he gives 100% to.
