“I thought nothing would be greater if I could turn my passion into work”

Margarita Iosif, who is a freelance Filmmaker, said “I thought nothing would be greater if I could turn my passion into work”. Read her inspiring story below…

What does your business do?

My name is Margarita Iosif and I am a freelance Filmmaker. I am interested in all sorts of filmmaking but mainly in conceptual and experimental video arts. I am fascinated by the potentials that the new media can bring to the craft of filmmaking and how fine art, fashion, music and other art forms can merge with the art of cinema. Films have the power to make a difference and there is no better way to engage and communicate with the audience rather than emotionally driven stories that offer an inspiring and stimulating experience. My goal is to create daring and remarkable video pieces that take the viewer through an unpredictable journey full of colors and sounds; I want them to see, explore and experience their worlds, as they never had before…

What made you decide to start your own business?

It was merely my love for filmmaking. I thought nothing would be greater if I could turn my passion into work, and then work become play.

What have been your biggest challenges so far?

Statistically, being a woman trying to break through into the film industry is a lot difficult and harder than any male directors out there. I am not telling this to complain about how unfair and male orientated the industry is, I am telling this just because I believe for your dream to come true you need to acknowledge the reality of it and understand the mechanisms of the industry.

How did you overcome these challenges?

Determination and persistence that must be the key! You need to earn people’s trust not only in you but in your talents too. It takes lots of patience, and time, you can’t just rush yourself into big projects, you need to take one step at a time, gain as much experience as possible, meet as much people as possible.

What advice or tips would you give to other business owners?

You need to love it more than you hate it, because they will be days that you will hate the hell out of it. It’s a hard job, without a clear and secure route so you have to be passionate and crazy in love (borderline madness) with your medium. And when things don’t go according to plan, don’t give up, trying to concentrate on the big picture and remember there is never just one way to reach your destination.

What’s your favorite quote?

“Not all those who wander are lost.” – J.R.R. Tolkien

Who inspires you?

I am inspired pretty much by everything. It can be just a single word, a note or a colour, a face or a story that I heard somewhere. And then, they are those great people, ordinary people that have amazing stories, they have lived through some of the toughest trials life could throw at them and yet they always have a smile on their face. And children, I have the best conversations with children!
