How to create a product

“Many people die with their music still in them. Why is this? Too often it is because they are getting ready to live. Before they know it time runs out.”

{Oliver Wendell Holmes}

I don’t know about you, but I do not want to die with my music still in me! I want to turn my ideas into a reality, I want to live my dreams and achieve my goals, but I’m going to be honest… sometimes it’s easier said than done! I have definitely come across a brick wall (or 2!) when trying to make my ideas real! However, I am so determined to achieve amazing things that when I find myself up against brick walls I know I have to figure out a way around. More often than not this involves getting help, learning new things, discovering how other people managed to do it. The last one is key for me, because when I see that someone else has done it, it makes me realise that I can do it too.

So in my latest video I interviewed Lucy Beer and Lara Morgan. Lucy came up with the idea to create a product that protects the heels of shoes from getting ruined when driving a car. She had no idea how to make it happen and so she asked Lara Morgan for help. Now her idea is an actual product called Well Heeled and you can find it at wellheeled.com. I love her story, because it really drives home the point that we can all do it, we can all make it happen, even if we start with no clue, we can get there.

The video is quite long and I know that you’re busy, so I’ve picked out some points that I thought were really valuable and listed them below. But if you can spare the time to watch it then I think you should, because Lucy and Lara share some amazing information!

Top bits of advice:

  • You have to start off by researching – get on Google and go for it!
  • Learn, learn, learn: make time to learn as much as possible.
  • Research potential manufacturers and suppliers online – alibaba.com is great for finding wholesale suppliers and manufacturers also look into what  support your country and other countries have for manufactures, for example Hong Kong has Hong Kong Trade & Development Council.
  • Find someone to hold you accountable.
  • Use common sense!!
  • Get clear on what you want to achieve and break it down.
  • Get clear on the numbers and keep going back to them.
  • It takes time and you have to stick at it.
  • Get out there and ask people what they think.
  • Pick up the phone and make sales calls.

There was so much great advice! Watch the video to discover the more in depth advice they shared.

I hope you find it valuable. If you have any tips on how to turn an idea into a product then please share in the comments below!
