Tell us about your business…

I design timeless, versatile, knit bamboo dresses that feel like a second skin.

What is a day in the life of you like?

I work from home with a pattern maker, my friend and employee. I like to rise early, do my 5 Tibetan Rites, and then I spend much of the day creating and producing new styles. I am continuously learning new techniques, researching new ideas and getting inspired from different sources and trends. Half of my day is spent on my computer, plugging away at everything from orders to inventory to marketing, networking, talking to suppliers, etc. I could be on the computer all day long, but try to finish around 7pm, after that I am exhausted! I love what I do.

What have been your biggest challenges so far with running your business?

The most challenging part of my business has been advertising and marketing my product. I sometimes feel like a tiny boat in the big sea of marketing, it’s tough to know what works, and where to invest my time and money. I have enjoyed the challenge though!

How did you overcome these challenges?

I just never gave up, tried new methods of advertising and kept going. I asked my customers and everyone that I meet in the industry a lot of questions. I still have so much to learn about marketing. It used to cause me a great deal of frustration, but I really enjoy it now.

What advice would you give to other business owners?

Make sure that you are doing what you love, doing something that you truly believe in. You won’t mind the long hours, the minor setbacks and disappointments if you are doing something that you are passionate about.

How do you keep motivated through difficult times?

I would never quit what I am doing because I love it so much. I remember the tiny victories through difficult times, and remember that ‘This too Shall Pass’. I also ask myself, “what have I learned from this, and how will I respond to this situation next time?” Stay positive, or have a glass of vino and a good cry, then get back up on the horse.

What’s your favourite quote?

I have so many… I post them all over my house and my bedroom; reminders.

Life and death are of supreme importance. Time passes swiftly, and opportunity is lost. Let us Awaken! Awaken.

Who inspires you?

My mother was a huge inspiration to me. Whenever I have any doubt about my path, I remember mom telling me that “Muse is going to be a HUGE SUCCESS, just keep going” No one had more faith in me than she did. It was she who told me for years, ‘Laura sweetie, you are a dress designer!’ She passed last August of brain cancer, quite suddenly. She is my hero. I am also a huge fan of Bjork. She is fearless, and is a creative genius in my opinion. There are too many designers to name, but I will mention the late Alexander McQueen. His work is. unrivalled

Do you have a business philosophy?

Positive, nurturing relationships are at the root of my business. I am committed to being gentle with our mother earth.
